Cardinals Walk Off Twice for Senior Day Sweep

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team earned their first sweep of the year in walk off fashion on Sunday, defeating Lindenwood 2-1 and 7-6 in eight innings. The wins moves the Cardinals to 4-12 on the season and 3-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

GAME ONE 
Jewell 2, Lindenwood 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lindenwood grabbed the early lead in the opener, scoring their only run of the game on a Cardinal miscue in the second inning. 
  • In the bottom of the third, Allison Rawls tied things up on a solo home run to straight away center before winning the game in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to left center field, scoring pinch runner Abby Vandiver

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Jewell outhit the Lions, 8-4, led by two from Rawls. 
  • Aly Manhart (1-5) earned the win, going all seven innings, allowing just four hits and no earned runs while striking out five. 

FOR THE LIONS
  • Ceairra Perez had two of the Lion's four hits in game one. 
  • Amanda Weyh (3-2) took the loss, striking out eight over six and two-thirds. 

GAME TWO 
Jewell 7, Lindenwood 6 (8 Innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both offenses came to life in game two with Jewell jumping out first. Kenzie Jones singled through the right side in the bottom of the second to score Tori Far and put the Cards on top. 
  • Lindenwood tied the game in the following half inning on a solo home run to left. 
  • Manhart responded by blasting her own long ball, a two-run shot, to left center to put Jewell back in front. 
  • The Lions plated three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to open up a 6-3 advantage late in the game. 
  • Down to their final at bat, the Cardinals put two one base for Hailey Wall who sent a towering shot over the center field wall to tie the game at six and force extra innings. 
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Kenzie Jones singled and moved to second on a sac bunt by Kolbee Kealoha being Payton Totzke came on to run. With the infielders drawn in Sabrina Olmo snuck a base hit up the middle  and Totzke was able to avoid the tag at the plate to give Jewell the sweep. 

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Jewell had nine hits, as Olmo, Manhart and Jones each finished with two.
  • Wall had three RBI while Manhart scored two runs. 
  • Sammie Welt (1-2) picked up her first career win, spinning four innings in relief, striking out a career-high eight. 

FOR THE LIONS
  • Lindenwood also finished with nine total hits led by three players with two. Karli Goocher had three RBI, including two home runs. 
  • Weyh (3-3) was handed the loss in game two, allowing four earned runs on five hits over three innings in relief. 

UP NEXT
Jewell is back in action on Monday as they host Maryville at 9:30 a.m. in a rescheduled doubleheader from Saturday.
