Softball Takes Game Two to Split at UMSL

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team dropped game one of a Saturday doubleheader at Missouri-St. Louis by a final of 3-2, but rallied to win game two, 6-5. The Cardinals move to 6-14 on the season and 5-6 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

GAME ONE
Jewell 2, UMSL 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got off to a good start in the opener as Aly Manhart launched her second home run of the year with a solo bomb to left field, putting the Cardinals on top early. 
  • UMSL tied things up quickly scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the first. 
  • The Cardinals retook the lead in the top of the second as Kenzie Jones doubled before scoring on a throwing error by the Triton catcher. 
  • In the bottom of the third, UMSL scored two runs on a double by McKenzie Lamos to take the lead for good. 

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Jewell had six hits in game one, led by two from Jones. 
  • Manhart (2-6) took the loss in the circle, with two earned runs over 2.2 innings. 

FOR THE TRITONS
  • UMSL was limited to just three hits, including the two-RBI double by Lamos.
  • Mimi Bradley (7-3) got the win for the Tritons, allowing just a single earned run. 

GAME TWO
Jewell 6, UMSL 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell wasted no time taking the lead in game two, scoring four runs on one play in the opening inning. Tori Farr doubled to score Sabrina Olmo and Abby Vandiver. Allison Rawls, who had singled, also scored on the play, on a throwing by error before Farr followed, scoring on another UMSL miscue.  
  • The Tritons cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on three hits.
  • The Cardinals added a run in the following frameas Kenzie Stahl singled up the middle and came around to score on another base hit by Rawls. 
  • UMSL got back within two in the bottom of the inning with a run on two hits before the Cardinals got the run back as Manhart scored on an RBI single by Hailey Wall
  • The Tritons made things interesting late, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within one, but Sammie Welt worked out of the jam. 

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Jewell pounded out 10 hits in the nightcap, with two each by Manhart, Wall and Farr, who also had two RBI. 
  • Welt (2-2) earned the win with four innings of work in relief, striking out two. 

FOR THE TRITONS
  • The Tritons got two hits apiece from Lamos and Jessica Mrzlak while Ali Schoon had two RBI. 
  • Jenna Towle (2-9) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on eight hits over four innings. 

UP NEXT
Jewell wraps up the weekend on Sunday as they travel to McKendree. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
