Cardinals Fall Short in Shootout with Southwest Baptist

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell and Southwest Baptist football teams put together one of the most impressive offensive performances in years for both squads, combining for more than 1,200 yards of total offense and 105 points. The Cardinals put together a late run but fell 55-50 to finish the spring season 0-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bearcats opened with a nine play drive ending in the end zone but the Cardinals got three back on a 23-yard field goal by Bradley West
  • SBU built a 21-3 lead before Anthony Prtizel connected with Grant Latina for a 36-yard touchdown reception. The Cardinals added two more scores on a one-yard pass to TJ Guillory followed by a one-yard run by Kirby Grigsby to pull the Cardinals with 28-24 at the half.
  • The Bearcats went on top 41-24 in the third quarter. Pritzel then found Jesse Thomas for 14 yards to the house to pull Jewell back within 10.
  • With the Cardinals driving, Troy Landon came up with a 50-yard interception to push the SBU lead back to 17.
  • Josh Yancey ran for a 58-yard play and capped off the drive with a one-yard run to get the Cardinals back within 10, 48-38. On the ensuing drive, Prtizel found Thomas once again, this time for 67 yards to end zone, to make it a four point game.
  • Facing third and 21 the Bearcats got a 77-yard reception from Jordan Kent to extend the lead back to 11. Jewell made things interesting down the stretch as Prtizel hit Jalik Jaggwe for a 58 yard touchdown reception to pull within five with under a minute to play but the Bearcats were able to recover the onside kick.

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Jewell totaled 649 yards of total offense which is the first time the Cardinals have surpassed 600 yards since posting 650 against Indianapolis in October 2015.
  • The 50 points is the most for Jewell since scoring 52 against Culver-Stockton in 2011, the program's first year in Division II.
  • The quarterback, Pritzel, set all kinds of new career-highs including 492 yards passing which is second most by a Cardinal in a single game in the NCAA era and the most since 2015. Additionally his 65 passing attempts set an NCAA era single game record, surpassing Nick West's 62 in 2015, while his five passing touchdowns ties West for the top mark, with the most recent coming in 2014. Finally, his 31 completions is also tied for fifth best and most since 2016.
  • On the ground, Yancey totaled 85 yards, including his 58-yard run which is sixth best in the NCAA era and highest since Glen Whitney's 53 yard rush in 2011.
  • Two players finished with more than 100 yards receiving led by Thomas with 130 with two touchdowns and Jaggwe with 111 and one touchdown. Latina followed closely with 96 yards and a score.
  • Defensively, freshman Myles Nash shined with nine tackles and two interceptions while Zac Bayless and Jake Hedrick each finished with seven tackles and one sack.

The Cardinals will return a large portion of players from this season and bring in an exciting recruiting class for the fall, which is anticipated to be a full schedule. The 2021 fall schedule will be released at a later date.
