Cardinals Drop High Scoring Affair with Missouri S&T

LIBERTY, Mo. - In a game that featured 47 runs and took more than four hours to complete, the William Jewell baseball team fell to Missouri S&T on Monday afternoon at Talley Stadium. The final score finished at 30-17, making it the most runs combined runs scored in a Jewell baseball game in the NCAA era. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Miners came out swinging, scoring five runs on three hits in the opening frame. Jewell got two runs back in the home half of the inning, as Jake Wilcox scored on a wild pitch before Anthony Hansen crossed the plate on a sac fly. 
  • Missouri S&T pushed their lead to six in the second, scoring three runs on four hits, but the Cardinals rallied in the bottom half, scoring four of their own. Alex Epp scored on a wild pitch before Hansen sent a three-run home run over the right field wall to pull the Cards within two. 
  • S&T scored four in the third and two in the fourth to extend their lead but Jewell got two back in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth to make it 14-9. 
  • In the sixth, the Miners scored two more on a home run by Matt Ward but Jewell rallied again, scoring four runs on RBI by Jade Smoot, Nick Modrcin and Epp. 
  • The Miners gained separation in the seventh, scoring eight runs on seven hits. Jewell got three back on three hits but S&T added six more in the following frame. 

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Jewell finished with 15 hits, led by three from Epp. Five other players, finished with two hits. 
  • Hansen had four RBI and scored four runs while Wilcox and Ryan Dickerson also crossed the plate three times. 
  • Mack Stephenson (1-4) took the loss as the starter. 

UP NEXT
Jewell heads east next weekend for their final road GLVC series of the year at Illinois Springfield.
