LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team earned a split with Southwest Baptist on Friday afternoon Talley Stadium. The Cardinals took game one by a final of 7-6 before a late inning rally in game two fell short, dropping the nightcap, 3-2.
GAME ONE
Jewell 7, Southwest Baptist 6
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Anthony Hansen kick started things for Jewell in the bottom of the first, sending a ball over the scoreboard in right field for his first home run of the season.
- Southwest Baptist scored a run on two hits in the top of the second to quickly tie the game up but the Cardinals regained the lead in the bottom of the frame, as Jake Wilcox singled to left, scoring two.
- Again SBU tied the game with two runs on two hits but Jewell responded immediately, putting two on for Cole Conner who singled through the left side, scoring Nick Modrcin, putting Jewell back in front, 4-3.
- In the fifth, the Bearcats got two runs on one hit and a Cardinal error to take their first lead of the game, but Conner came through again with another RBI single to tie things up once again.
- SBU retook the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring on a passed ball, but in the bottom of the inning, Wilcox singled and was followed by home run to right center by Hansen, his second of the day to put the Cards on top for good.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Hansen finished with three hits, including two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored.
- Conner, Wilcox and Drew Reed also had two hits apiece.
- Jake MacDonald (1-0) earned his first win, working three innings of relief, allowing just one earned run with four strikeouts.
FOR THE BEARCATS
- The Bearcats were outhit 11-7, led by two each from Josh Scott, Sam Avila and Blake Ford.
- David Tongue (0-1) took the loss, allowing the two earned runs in the sixth.
GAME TWO
Jewell 7, Southwest Baptist 6
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bearcats took the early lead in game two, scoring an unearned run in the top of the second inning.
- Jewell tied the game in the bottom half on an RBI single by Wilcox to score Alex Epp who doubled.
- SBU added single runs in the third and fourth to go back on top 3-1.
- Down to their final chance in the bottom of the seven, Jade Smoot led off with a triple before scoring on a wild pitch to pull Jewell within one but the Cardinals recorded three straight outs to final by the final of 3-2.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Smoot and Modrcin had two hits each while the also Cardinals received five free passes.
- Shane Cavallo (2-1) suffered the loss, despite tossing a complete game and allowing just a single earned run.
FOR THE BEARCATS
- Colby Sneed posted two hits to pace SBU.
- Dalton Morrow (3-1) earned the win, giving up one earned run on seven hits.
