LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team put together a ninth inning rally but left the tying run stranded at third base, falling 4-3, on Sunday in the season finale against Rockhurst. The Cardinals finish 11-29 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both pitchers were sharp from the beginning, putting up two scoreless innings. In the top of the third, the Hawks took advantage of three Jewell miscues to plate four unearned runs.
- The Cardinals got one run back in the bottom half of the frame when Quincy Aldrich scored on a sac fly from Cameron Fliege. Anthony Hansen cut the deficit in half in the next inning with an RBI double to left center.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Jewell got back-to-back singles and a hit-by-pitch to quickly load the bases with no outs. Hansen flied out to score Arian Jimenez-Quezada to cut the Rockhurst lead to one, 4-3. A fielder's choice moved Chase Elias to third base but he was left stranded.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Hansen, Aldrich and Ben Click all finished with two hits for the Cardinals while Jimenenz-Quezada scored twice.
- Alex Schneider (1-5) went a strong seven-plus innings, striking out three while not allowing an earned run.
Jewell will say farewell to seven seniors, including Schneider,
