CARDINAL NOTES
  • The Cardinals are coming off a 3-8-2 season last spring, in an abbreviated schedule. This was the first time since the program began in 1966 that the Cardinals did not play fall soccer.
  • Jewell welcomed in a 13-member recruiting class, including four transfers, two coming from across town at Kansas City. Mikhail McComie is among the most notable transfers having played in 16 games with the Roos scoring two goals on eight shots, including a game winner.
  • Seven of the nine freshmen are from the Kansas City metro, including Olathe (5), Overland Park (1) and Lenexa (1). Jack Gintz comes to The Hill from Springfield, Missouri while Cole Hoppe is the lone out-of-state rookie, hailing from Omaha, Nebraska.
  • Headlining the list of returners is four-year starter Keaton Wiley along the back line. Wiley has played in 44 career games, accounting for nearly 3,600 minutes. Sam Wambold is also back after leading all freshman field players with more than 1,100 minutes, starting 12 of 13 games in his first season.
  • Leading the way offensively, among returners, is Carson Lee who led the Cardinals with four goals last spring along with one assist for a team-high nine points. Ethan Jayaram had five points, including two goals, in his debut season but is expected to miss the 2021 campaign.
  • Ethan Nichols, Roberto Ramirez and Trey Berman all found the back of the goal last season and are back for Jewell, with Nichols posting a team-best three assists as a freshman.
  • In goal, Eli Gratz, played all but 57 minutes in the spring, ranking second in Division II with 60 saves as a true freshman and will be challenged by junior Jayden Hicks along with newcomer Brayden Satterfield for the starting job.
  • This week will mark the first non-conference games for Jewell in nearly two calendar years as the Cardinals played a 13-game, GLVC only schedule in the spring. The last non-GLVC opponent was Harding who came to Liberty on September 8, 2019. The last road non-conference game was a 3-2 overtime win over Southern Nazarene in September 2018.
  • Jewell opens the season on the road for the second year in a row and the third time last four years with hopes of improving upon their road record. Last season, all three wins and both ties came at home as the Cardinals went 0-4 on the road. Jewell has gone 5-22-4 away from Greene Stadium since 2018.
  • Eddie Horn enters his third year at the helm, after having been hired just four months prior to the start of his first season. In his second seasons he tripled the win total from the previous year and tied the most GLVC wins in a season since 2015. Prior to Jewell he spent time as the head coach at State Fair Community College and Jefferson City High School, and two years at Kansas City under Jewell Hall of Famer Chris Cissell, '94.
ABOUT COLORADO CHRISTIAN
  • After winning just one game per season for three straight years, Colorado Christian showed vast improvement last spring with a 6-5 record, their first winning mark in program history.
  • The Cougars graduated their top three goal scorers but return four others who scored at least once. Gabe Roloff put one in goal while dishing out three assists for seven points while Ben Hess scored twice.
  • Max Collingwood did majority of the work in goal last spring, starting 11 games for nearly 1,000 minutes. As a sophomore, he posted 42 saves and had three shutouts while being named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Year.
  • Brad Camp enters his third season with the Cougars after making a five-win improvement in year two and coaching two All-Conference performers.
