CARDINAL NOTES
  • Jewell enters 2021 following a 1-10-2 spring campaign. The Cardinals got their first win under head coach Cory Herchenroeder in a 2-1 season finale victory at Southwest Baptist.
  • The Cardinals brought in a nine-member recruiting class, including six freshmen and three transfers. Four of the freshmen hail from the Kansas City metro while two others come from southwest Missouri.
  • Headlining the list of transfers is fifth year senior Alex Johnson, who is pursuing a degree in nursing at Jewell after earning a bachelor's degree in exercise science at GLVC foe Maryville. During her years with the Saints, she was a four-time All-GLVC performer, two-time All-Region honoree and was the 2017 GLVC Freshman of the Year. She totaled 24 goals, 11 assists and started 62 games during her career.
  • Corrine Hughes and Paige Liston wrap up the group of transfers, coming from Kansas City Kansas Community College where they led the Blue Devils to the NJCAA National Tournament. Hughes was a two-time All-KJCCC selection and 2020-21 All-American.
  • Along with Johnson and Hughes, freshman Clara Fronabarger joins senior Jasmine Collier and junior Kate Lawrence to form a nearly entirely new front line. The talented five are expected to help push the Cardinals into a new level offensively. Jewell has averaged less than one goal per game in four of the last five seasons.
  • Johnson along with junior Alex Entz have been chosen by their teammates as the 2021 team captains. Johnson is the most experienced player on the roster with more than 60 games under her belt. Meanwhile, Entz made a position change last year and went on to play in a team-high 1,072 minutes. She has appeared in 31 games over the course of her first two seasons.
  • In the spring, the goalkeeper battle heated up between Kaylie Kappelmann and Katie Wagenheim. The duo appeared in nearly equal games and minutes with the former grabbing 35 saves and a .761 save percentage while the latter had 39 saves with a .736 save percentage. Freshman Emily Glassman adds additional competition to the mix after earning All-Conference honors at Olathe North.
  • In addition to Entz and Collier, Mallory Dickerson, Rylie May, Abbey Negosian and Aubrey Avalos all return after playing in more than 600 minutes last season, the latter three all as true freshmen.
  • Jewell was picked 14th in the GLVC preseason poll, just ahead of Southwest Baptist. McKendree was predicted to win the league title with Southern Indiana, Rockhurst and Drury also receiving first place votes.
ABOUT WASHBURN
  • Washburn enters the 2021 season after not competing, officially, in nearly two years. They did compete an abbreviated unofficial schedule in the spring, going 3-6-1 against MIAA opponents. In 2019, the Ichabods went 7-10-1 overall.
  • Washburn returns three All-MIAA performers from that 2019 including Tera Lynch who was second on the team with three goals and 12 points while dishing out a team-high six assits.
  • In goal, Raegan Wells was an All-MIAA honorable mention selection as a sophomore after posting 117 saves over 18 games.
  • Davy Phillips enters his fifth season at the helm of the Washburn program, with a 24-29-4 overall record. As a player he was a three-time All-Conference selection at Baker.
  • In the most recent meeting with the Cardinals, Washburn scored three first half goals to win 3-0.
ABOUT ROGERS STATE
  • Rogers State enters the week after a 5-5 spring campaign where they averaged nearly two goals on 17 shots per game.
  • Kori Watters is the top returning threat on offense, scoring a team-best five goals for 11 total points. As a freshman, Vanessa Gonzalez added three goals and two assists while putting the ball on target more than 52% of the time.
  • Cambree Towle oversaw the net last year, playing every minute of the abbreviated season. Over the 742 minutes of action, she totaled 39 saves with a save percentage of better than 81%.
  • Josh Smith was hired in January 2020 and coached the 10-game abbreviated spring season and will now enter his first full season at the helm. To bolster his roster, the Hillcats and Smith brought in 16 freshmen this fall.
  • The Cardinals handedly defeated Rogers State in their last meeting, albeit, six years ago, by a final of 5-0.
