LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's soccer team made a first half goal stand on Sunday as they defeated Southwest Baptist in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams, by a final of 1-0. The Cardinals improve to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in league action. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• There was a lot of action early on with 13 combined shots in the first 24 minutes but neither team was able to convert. 
• In the 41st minute Cole Bulgren found Jack Mason who scored from 20 yards out in the center to put Jewell on top.
• The second half was even busier as the teams combined for 23 shots. The Bearcats got their best chance late in regulation, recording four shots in the span of 63 seconds but keeper Eli Gratz kept SBU at bay to secure the win.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Jewell was out shot 26-17, but had five players with multiple attempts, led by Walker Bond's four. Bulgren and Ethan Nichols each finished with two. 
• Mason scored the first goal of his collegiate career while Bulgren gets his third assist.
• Gratz recorded a career-best nine saves in his second career shutout.

The Cardinals are back at home next weekend at they host Missouri S&T on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. followed by a date with Drury on Sunday afternoon.
