Cardinals Hit the Road for Split Weekend

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell volleyball team opens a quick two-game road trip on Friday night as they travel to Missouri Southern for a non-conference match up before returning to GLVC play on Saturday at Missouri S&T.

CARDINAL NOTES
  • Jewell enters the week looking to snap a five-game skid, and sitting at 4-9 on the season. 
  • The Cardinals are one of the best blocking teams in the GLVC this season, sitting at No. 5 in the league with 1.98 per set as a team. Lily Johnson leads the team with 0.91 per set, 11th in the conference, while Chloe Robison averages 0.62 and Tatum Ernt 0.52. The senior Johnson is up to 40 on the season and 124 for her career to move into the No. 10 spot in the NCAA era. 
  • Along the back row, Haidan Baade has moved back into the libero role as of late, posting back-to-back games of at least 15 digs. Meanwhile, Jordan Collard still leads the team with 3.71 digs per set. 
  • Offensively, Johnson continues to lead Jewell in her senior season with 2.25 kills per set on a .189 attack percentage. Bella LaPorta now hits at 1.89 and Tatum Ernt 1.71 kills per set. 
  • Samantha Thompson is tops on the setting staff with 4.74 assists per set while Hannah Cope adds 4.45. 
  • The Thompson twins, Samantha and McKinzie, have proven to be a tough duo from behind the service line, combining for 19 of Jewell's 47 aces. McKinzie Thompson enters the week 10th in the GLVC with 0.35 per set. 

ABOUT MISSOURI SOUTHERN
  • Missouri Southern enters the weekend with an overall record of 3-9 and having dropped their last five. 
  • CC Pollard leads the offense with 3.14 kills per set while Bonnie Hegarty adds 2.56
  • Sophie Mader runs the show with 8.68 assist per set, and already more than 1,100 on the season.
  • Defensively, Brooklynn McCain averages 3.63 digs per set while Kierson Maydew has 0.61 blocks.
  • Kalie Mader, the older sister of Lion setter, Sophia Mader, is now in her fourth season with MSSU after three years at Blinn College where she went 73-43. 

ABOUT MISSOURI S&T
  • Missouri S&T enters the week as one of the hotter teams in the GLVC as winners of eight of their last 10 games. They sit at 9-3 on the season and 3-1 in the conference. 
  • Payton Gannaway is back for her fifth year after earning unanimous First Team All-GLVC honors last spring. The right side hitter leads the team with 3.85 kills per set on a .188 clip. Jordan Burton also adds more than 3.4 kills per set to create a potent 1-2 punch. 
  • Hannah Merjil has done majority of the setting, accounting for 344 assists and 7.32 per set. 
  • Defensively, the Miners are second in the GLVC with 114 total blocks and 2.43 per set, led by Kiernan O'Boyle's 1.18.
  • In the back row, Meiko Pearson puts up 3.59 digs per set while three others have more than two per set. 
  • Andy Halaz is now in fourth season with the Miners and helped return the program to GLVC prominence, culminating in an appearance in the conference tournament championship game last April.
