ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The three pointers were flying for the William Jewell women's basketball team on Saturday as they hit 12-of-29, the most this season, but came up short at Maryville, 70-57.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell got off to a slow start, falling in an 8-0 hole and forcing a quick timeout from Jill Slominski. The Cardinals, led by Kate Hillyer, got back in it with three straight triples from the freshman guard to get back within five.
- The Cardinal offense came to life in the second period, outscoring Maryville 18-10. Libby Arnold scored seven in the quarter to lead the way as Jewell went on a 15-6 run to pull within one at the half, 31-30.
- The Saints scored the first seven points of the second half to go back on top by eight but Jewell hung around, finishing the period on a 5-2 spurt after a three from Arnold to trail by just five heading into the final frame.
- Maryville outscored the Cardinals 22-14 over the last 10 minutes, including a late 12-4 run to put the game out of reach.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Arnold led all scorers with 20 points to go with five rebounds while Hillyer added 21 points and two blocks.
- Katie Knock finished with a team-best seven rebounds and six assists.
- Jewell shot 42.9% from the floor and 41.4% from three.
