LIBERTY, Mo. - William Jewell wraps up a two-game home stand this week, hosting Truman State, who is receiving votes in the national poll this week. The Cardinals are searching for their first GLVC win of the year.
THE SERIES
The Cardinals are 8-14-2 all time against Truman State, with the series beginning in 1903. The teams played nearly annually until 1923 followed by a nearly 40-year break before meeting in 1961 before another lengthy break until the Bulldogs joined the GLVC in the fall of 2013.
CARDINAL NOTES
- Grant Latina has been a slippery return man since he stepped on campus and enters week eight ranked second in the conference with an average of 25.5 yards per kick off return, 33rd best in Division II.
- Deldrionn Amos caught his fifth touchdown of the year on Saturday against Missouri S&T, moving him into a 13-way tie for 12th all-time. The junior is fourth in the conference with 420 total receiving yards and an average of 60 per game.
- Adam Callahan and Sean Mitchell combined for 20 tackles against Missouri S&T last week, with the latter adding a sack and forced fumble. The sophomore Callahan enters the week second in the GLVC with 8.4 tackles per game while Mitchell follows close behind with 7.3 and is fifth in the league.
- Terik Hickmon is one of a handful of rookies who have seen their field time increase as of late and he has made the most of it. The freshman recorded six tackles last weekend, along with a pass breakup and fumble recovery. Justin Endicott, Kevin Roberson and KC Ericksen are among some of the others who have increased their production defensively as the trio combined for 13 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a pass breakup their last time out.
- After three weeks of increased ground performance, including a season best 225 yards against McKendree, the Cardinals struggled running the ball last wek, being held to five yards. Jordan Clay and Tabren Yates has carried much of the load this season with 260 and 250 yards, respectively with three scores.
- The defense comes into week eight ranked third in the conference with 6.4 tackles for loss per game, led by Kian Betancourt's 1.0 per outing, which is sixth among individual players. Jewell has posted at least six takedowns behind the line of scrimmage in six of seven games this fall with a season high eight for 48 yards last weekend, with two sacks.
- With some trickery on display last week, Marquis Whitmire connected with Deldrionn Amos for a 22-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Whitmire is the fifth player to attempt a pass for the Cardinals this season, joining three quarterbacks CJ Ward, Taylor Eggers and Bart Harris, along with another receiver Grant Latina. Only twice before in the NCAA have the Cardinals seen two non-quarterbacks attempt a pass in the same season in receiver Trejuan Mask (WR) and Dalton Dye (P) in 2017 and Scott Buffa (WR) and Warren Frevert (P) in 2012.
- Greene Stadium was completed in 1955 and has served as the home of the Cardinals for the past 66 seasons but 2022 will be its last. Following the conclusion of the season construction will begin on The Link Project which will include among its features a new indoor arena, locker room and coaches spaces, athletic training room and student fitness center on the inside of the building along with a new stadium and campus entrance design on the outside. The $20 million campaign was matched this summer and the ceremonial ground breaking took place homecoming weekend.
