QUINCY, Ill. - The William Jewell football team closed the 2022 season with a 17-7 victory over Quincy University in the second annual Battle of the Birds to earn their first conference win since 2018 and first road win since 2017. The Cardinals finish 2-9 overall and 1-5 in the GLVC. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Cardinals started strong as Sean Mitchell picked up a fumble on Quincy's opening drive and ran it 73 yards for a score to put Jewell on top early. 
• On the first play of the second quarter CJ Ward found Jesse Thomas for a 20-yard touchdown pass that extended the lead to 14-0 at the break. 
• Quincy got on the board midway through the third quarter but the Jewell defense locked down and forced three turnovers and two punts to close the game.  

KEY STATS

• The Cardinal defense finished with a season best 10 tackles for loss for 60 yards, led by four from KC Ericksen. 
• Mitchell and Terik Hickmon each grabbed an interception while the former and Carson Anderson both picked up a fumble recovery. 
• Ward passed for 148 yards on 12 completions, mixing up receivers as four finished with at least 24 yards. Thomas finished with 54 yards on five catches while Keavian Long added 38, Deldrionn Amos, 28 and Grant Latina 24.
• Jordan Clay ran for 43 yards on the ground while Chris Collier-Surly added 20.

Jewell will lose 11 players to graduation this winter but is on an upward trajectory after the first multiple win season since 2017.
