Cardinals Drop Road Game at Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. - The William Jewell men's basketball team dropped a 70-63 decision on the road on Wednesday night at Washburn University. The Cardinals drop to 1-2 on the season with the loss. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals came out of the gates fast, taking a 14-4 lead after a Grant Stubbs three. Washburn followed up with an 18-4 run to rally and go in front 22-18.
  • Jewell got things back within two but a three at the buzzer by the Ichabod's Connor Deffenaugh made it a five-point game at the break. 
  • In the second half, the Cardinals cut into the lead repeatedly only to see Washburn put it back to double digits.
  • Two free throws from Jordan Jermain cut the deficit to four with just over two minutes to play but the Cardinals were forced to put Washburn on the line late where the Ichabods were 7-for-8 to escape with the seven-point win.  

KEY STATS
  • Heri Tshiyoyo collected a double-double fo 19 points and 11 points while blocking five shots.. 
  • Jermain added 14 points while Kobe McKinley chipped in 10. 
  • Jewell out shot Washburn, hitting 41% from the field, but were just 16-of-27 from the free throw line.

The Cardinals return to the Mabee Center for the first time this season as they host Emporia State on Friday at 8 p.m.
