Jewell Hosts Maryville, McKendree to Begin GLVC Action

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team looks to get back on track this weekend as they open Great Lakes Valley Conference play, hosting Maryville on Saturday afternoon before McKendree comes to town on Monday. 
 

THE SERIES

  • The Cardinals are 6-10 against Maryville in the NCAA era and are seeking their first win over the Saints since January 2021.
  • Jewell has gone back and forth with the Bearcats of McKendree, holding a 6-5 lead in the NCAA era series and winning four of the last six.     

CARDINAL NOTES

  • Ayden Shannon has dished out a team best 11 assists through five games this season for an average of 2.2. Meanwhile, the freshman point guard has committed just four turnovers for one of the top assist-to-turnover ratio in the conference at 2.75. 
  • The Cardinals are young this winter but also long and athletic which has accounted for an average of 3.2 blocks per game, second best in the GLVC, led by five from Rachel Senn. Senn, Chloe Frank and Abigail Jones are each in the top-10 in the league in total blocks while Shannon and Elizabeth Ernsting also have two apiece. 
  • Jewell is looking for their first conference win since a 72-66 victory over Rockhurst to close the regular season in February 2021. 
  • Chloe Frank has presented a match up problems for each of the Cardinals first five opponents. The six-foot freshman has the size of a power forward but the shooting touch of a small guard. Frank enters the week ranked fifth in the GLVC in three point field goal percentage of 43.5% while hitting 10 total, highest on the team and sixth best in the league. 
  • Ten different players has appeared in all five games this season, for an average of at least seven minutes. The Cardinals have been relatively well balanced in minutes played with only three, Frank, Ayden Shannon, and Emree Zars, averaging better than 20 minutes per game.
