LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell women's basketball team came up short in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener on Saturday afternoon against Maryville University by a final of 63-47. The Cardinals fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Maryville held the Cardinals without a point for nearly six minutes to open the game, taking an early 8-0 lead during that time. Emree Zars scored two layups, but Jewell trailed 14-4 after one period. 
• The offense found a rhythm in the second quarter, beginning with an 11-5 run capped by a jump shot from D'Asya Collier-Williams. The Saints closed the half with a 10-4 run of their own to hold a 29-19 advantage at the break. 
• After Maryville expanded their lead to 15 midway through the third period, the Cardinals rallied, finishing the frame on an 11-4 run to pull within 42-34. 
• The Saints outscored Jewell 21-13 in the fourth to pull away late and bring the score to the final. 

 
KEY STATS

• Zars posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Ayden Shannon also finished in double figures with 11 points. 
• Jewell shot 32% from the floor and scored 30 points in the paint, but both teams struggled from long range, combining to go 8-for-49.
