BENTONVILLE, Ark. - The William Jewell softball team opened the 2022 season on Friday afternoon at the Alvy Early Classic. After a three-run rally to tie the game, the Cardinals fell in nine innings to Pittsburg State by a final of 4-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pittsburg State got on the board first, scoring two runs on two hits in the opening frame. The Gorillas added a run in the third on a Jewell miscue to push their lead to 3-0.
- In the fourth inning, the Cardinal offense came alive as a double, an infield single and a walk loaded the bases. With one out, Sydney Cure singled to right field scoring Kenzie Jones. Sophia Lopez followed with a fielder's choice allowing two runs to cross the plate and tie the game.
- In the top of the ninth, Pittsburg State got a lead off double and advanced on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly from Kami Zimmerman allowed the pinch runner to score and put the Gorillas back on top for good.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Cure led the Cardinals with two hits, including a double, while Lauren Ledbetter drew two walks.
- Sammie Welt (0-1) took the loss in relief.
