CARDINAL NOTES
  • The Cardinals are looking to end the regular season strong on Thursday as they travel to crosstown rival Rockhurst.
  • Jewell enters the week in ninth place in the GLVC Point Rating System. The top team in the PRS at the conclusion of the regular season will receive a first-round bye in the GLVC Tournament, while seeds 2-8 will host first round games. A Cardinal win, coupled with two Lindenwood losses could potentially open the door for Jewell to host a first-round game on Monday.
  • On Saturday, Mason Alexander became the 44th member of the men's basketball 1,000 Point Club. He joins former teammates Keith Hayes (1,111) and Eysan Wiley (1,374) along his former coach Larry Holley (1,122) on the list of great Cardinal scorers. The senior will also graduate among the best in three-point shooting, currently ranked fifth in with 199 three pointers made.
  • Jewell continues to be one of the top defensive teams in the GLVC and Division II as they rank fifth in the league and 45th nationally in scoring defense, allowing opponents just 67.5 points per game. The Cardinals are also among the best in three-point field goal defense, permitting opponents to shoot at a 31.3% clip, which is second in the conference, behind only Southern Indiana (29.1%).
  • The Cardinals have not been to the conference tournament since 2018 but are now guaranteed an appearance with the recent adjustment of GLVC policy. Due to COVID-19 cancelations and the inequities of the number of games played across the league, the conference tournament will now feature all 15 teams, with the regular season champion receiving a first round by while seeds 2-8 will host first round games on February 28. This policy is in place for the 2022 tournament only.
  • While the Cardinals have been to four GLVC Tournaments in their nine eligible seasons (not eligible in 2011-12 due to NCAA transition), Jewell has never won a postseason game as an NCAA member. In 2018, the Cards nearly pulled an upset of top seed and No. 4 ranked Bellarmine, trailing by just one with 22 seconds to play but were forced to foul, allowing the Knights to pull out the 70-65 win.
  • Chris McCabe is now in his third season at the helm of the Cardinal program and has surpassed his highest win total (10) from his first season. Under McCabe, the Cardinals have defeated two nationally ranked teams, No. 12 Bellarmine (2020) and No. 11 Washburn (2021) along with Indianapolis (2020) who was receiving votes in the polls at the time.
  • Jewell is in its 123rd season of men's basketball on The Hill and are chasing win No. 1,700. The Cardinals entered the season with 1,668 victories, winning nearly 60% of the time over the last century-plus.

ABOUT ROCKHURST
  • Rockhurst enters the week looking to snap a seven-game skid and sitting at 10-18 on the season, 5-13 in the GLVC.
  • The Hawks are led by senior forward Nick Volz who averages a team high 15.4 points and 6.5 rebounds while handing out 3.1 assists and shooting nearly 56% from the floor, third best in the GLVC.
  • Three other players, Jake Auer (12.7), Rich Byhre (11.5) and Maxim Romanov (10.8) also average in double figures for Rockhurst.
  • The Hawks lead the GLVC and are 41st Division II with more than 640 three-point field goal attempts, led by Auer who boasts 205 of those, 16th most nationally. Rockhurst has made at least nine triples in seven of their 10 wins.
  • Drew Diener is in his seventh season with the Hawks after a successful stint at Cardinal Stritch where he won six conference titles and was the NAIA Division II Coach of the Year in 2013.
