Cardinals Open Season with Two Wins over Bemidji State

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team began their 2022 season on Saturday by grabbing a two-game sweep of Bemidji State, 10-3 and 7-5. 

Game 1 (Jewell 10, Bemidji State 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell wasted no time scoring their first runs of the season, plating three runs on four hits in the opening inning. The first four batters posted base hits, including and RBI double by Cameron Fliege and a single to center from Alex Epp
  • The Beavers got one back in the top of the second on a sac fly but Jewell went back on top by three in the bottom of the third after Quincy Aldrich tripled and scored on a failed pick off error. 
  • Bemidji State plated two runs on two hits and took advantage of a pair of Cardinal miscues to get within one run, 4-3. Jewell got both runs back in the bottom of the frame with RBI hits from Fliege and Anthony Hansen
  • Aldrich tripled and crossed the plate on a throwing error once again, this time by the Beaver catcher. The Cardinals broke things open with three addition runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell outhit the Beavers 14-6, led by Fliege and Jake Wilcox with three hits apiece.
  • Aldridge posted two triples while Hansen and Fliege each had two doubles. 
  • Fliege posted a game-high three RBI. 
  • Reed Pegram (1-0) got the win, working six complete innings, striking out two while allowing three runs. 

Game 2 (Jewell 7, Bemidji State 5)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The roles were reversed in game two with Bemidji State taking the early 3-0 lead with five hits in the first inning. The Beavers added a run in the third on an RBI single through the left side. 
  • The Cardinals cut the deficit in half in the third inning after loading the bases for Fliege who singled to right field. Epp followed with a sac fly scoring Wilcox. 
  • In the fifth inning Fliege put a sac fly into the center, scoring Hansen to pull the Cards within one but BSU responded with a score of their own to make it 5-3. 
  • Jewell rallied in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs on four hits. Alridge walked followed by a double from Drew Reed to put two in scoring position for Ryan Dickerson who came through with a two-RBI single to left. With two out and the bases loaded Fliege singled through the left side scoring Hansen and Chase Elias to put Jewell on top for good.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Fliege again led the offense with three hits and four RBI. 
  • Brogan McDougall (1-0) earned the win, working three innings in relief. Jake MacDonald struck out seven over five innings in his first start of the season. 
  • Drew Dant threw 10 strikes on 11 pitches in the top of the ninth to secure three quick outs, including two strikeouts, and earn the save.

Jewell and Bemidji State will wrap up their four game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Fountain Bluff Sports Complex.
