LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell women's basketball team opened their final home stand of the season on Monday evening, falling to Maryville University 80-53. The Cardinals started off hot from long range, making five shots from downtown accounting for all of their first quarter points but came up short down the stretch.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a quick five points from Maryville's Antoinette Mussorici, Jewell answered with a Katie Knock three that sparked a shooting frenzy from downtown, the first of five in the opening quarter. D'Asya Collier-Williams got in on the action, splashing in three treys herself.
- Maryville went on a 9-2 run to start the second quarter, going up 30-17 before Elizabeth Ernsting put in a three-pointer. Slow shooting by both teams allowed for the Cardinals to hold the Saints scoreless for the last 2:43 before Ernsting hit her second three of the quarter as the buzzer sounded, going into halftime down 40-25.
- Maryville outscored Jewell by just two, 30-28, in the second half but the lead too much for the Cardinals to overcome. Jewell scored 17 points in the final quarter using five different underclassmen.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Libby Arnold finished with 11 points, her second straight double-digit points performance, shooting 5-of-6 from the field.
- Knock and Ernsting both collected eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
- After shooting nearly 50% from three through the first two quarters, the Cards connected on just two shots from beyond the arc out of halftime.
