Cardinals Fall Short Against Illinois Springfield

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team put together one of the best all-around performances of 2022 but fell short against Illinois Springfield 72-57.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals got off to a quick start, scoring the first five points and blocking Illinois Springfield's first two shots. The Stars followed with a 12-2 run to go on top before a bucket from Skyler Boylan and a triple by Libby Arnold knotted things up at a dozen each.
  • The second quarter was another close one, with UIS outscoring the Cardinals by just one, 20-19. The Stars expanded their lead to 10 with less than 90 seconds to play in the period but Jewell cut the deficit in half after a jumper from Katelynn Ostronic and a 30-foot three at the buzzer by D'Asya Collier-Williams.
  • The Cardinals shot just 33% in the third quarter as UIS took their largest lead of the night at 55-43 but another three from Arnold cut it under single digits to close the period.
  • Jewell stayed within striking distance until late. After a three by Boylan, the Prairie Stars finished on a 10-4 run to make it a 15-point final.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Boylan scored a career high 15 points while Katie Knock added 12 and Arnold 11.
  • Collier-Williams and Lea Finn led with six rebounds each while the latter posted a career best three blocks.
  • The Cardinals shot 89% from the free throw line, second best this season, while holding UIS to 21% from three.
