KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Monday afternoon, hosting Missouri S&T on the Urban Youth Academy, their temporary home during field construction. The Cardinals took game one 5-1 before fall 6-3 in the nightcap to move to 3-11 on the season, 1-1 in league play.
Game 1: Jewell 5, Missouri S&T 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell got on the board first in the bottom of the third as back-to-back singles from Kenzie Jones and Allison Rawls put two on for Sydney Cure who sent a triple down the left field line scoring both runners.
- In the fifth, Jones and Rawls came up with the RBI on a fielder's choice and double to right center to double the advantage to 4-0.
- The Miners got on the board in the sixth but the Cards go that run back in the bottom of the frame as Abby Dubinski blasted her first home run of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jones led the way at the plate and in the circle finishing with two hits and two runs. The senior also tossed a complete game with six strikeouts and just one earned run.
- Rawls also recorded two hits as Jewell had nine as a team.
Game 2: Jewell 3, Missouri S&T 6
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals broke the ice in the fourth as Rawls singled and scored on an RBI groundout by Dubinski.
- The Miners tied things up in the fifth but Jewell came right back with two more on a triple to right center off the bat of Abby Vandiver who then took home to make it a 3-1 Cardinal lead.
- In the top of the sixth, Missouri S&T scored five runs on six hits, including a grand slam, to go ahead for good.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rawls and Vandiver each finished with two hits and a run while Jones and Sopia Lopez had the other Cardinal hits.
- Sammie Welt (0-5) took the loss, allowing two earned runs.

Jewell returns to action on Tuesday as they host Drury University at Urban Youth Academy at 12 p.m.
