KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Playing their sixth game in three days, the William Jewell softball team got timely hits and took advantage of miscues by Emporia State to sweep a doubleheader over the Hornets, 6-3 and 8-7 in extra innings. The Cardinals improve to 5-13 on the season with the wins.
Game 1: Jewell 6, Emporia St. 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell wasted no time jumping on top in the opening game, scoring three runs on three hits in the first inning. Sydney Cure singled to right field to score Kenzie Jones before Ella Hoffman doubled to deep center field to score two more.
- After the Cardinal defense put up zeros through the first four frames, Emporia State tied things up in the fifth with three runs on two hits.
- Jewell immediately responded as Abby Vandiver led off the bottom half of the inning with a single to left before back-to-back Hornet errors scored two to put the Cards back on top 5-3.
- In the sixth, Sabrina Olmo reached on an error and scored on an RBI groundout from Vandiver to bring the score to the final.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell finished with six hits, led by two from Sydney Cure.
- Hoffman had two RBI while Allison Rawls scored twice.
- Aliyah Santiago (1-4) got her first career win in the circle, working five innings while Sydney Parra (1) picked up a save with two clean frames.
Game 2: Jewell 8, Emporia St. 7 (8 Inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In game two it was the Hornets who took the early lead with a two-run home run in the first.
- Emporia State added a run in the top of the second before the Cardinals tied things up in the bottom half. With two runners on, Jewell took advantage of a three-base error to score both before Vandiver singled to center to plate Olmo.
- In the fourth, the Hornets loaded the bases for Ward who put three-RBI triple into right center to put ESU back in front, 6-3.
- Hoffman blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning, her second of the year, to bring the Cards within two.
- Down to their last opportunity, Kolbee Kealoha worked a pinch hit 11-pitch walk before Vandiver came through once again with a two-run home run to left tying things up at six-all.
- With international tie breaker rules in place, Emporia State quickly scored to go on top, 7-6. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and two on for the Cardinals, Abby Dubinski sent a ground ball to the shortstop who committed two errors on the play allowing both runners to score completing the sweep.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Vandiver led the offense with two hits, including a home run, to go with three RBI and one run.
- Hoffman also finished with two hits and two runs.
- Sydney Parra (1-1) pitched 4.1 innings in relief, giving up just one unearned run on three hits, to earn her first win.
