Cardinal Bats Dominant in 19-2 Win Over Drury

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team put up 19 runs, including six home runs, on their way to a dominant 19-2 victory over GLVC Green Division Champions Drury University on Sunday to close the regular season. The Cardinals move to 30-19 on the year, their first 30 win season since 2016. By securing the win in game four, the Cardinals put together an entire regular season in which they were not swept, including split series, for the first time since 2015.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals struck first in the bottom of the second as Drew Reed blasted a two run home run to left before Ryan Dickerson followed with a solo shot two batters later.
  • Drury got two solo home runs in the fourth to briefly pull within one but an RBI fielder's choice by Anthony Hansen and a sac fly from Cameron Fliege pushed the lead back to three.
  • Reed hit his second two run shot of the day in the fifth as the Cardinals increased their lead to 8-2.
  • In the bottom of the sixth the offense exploded, taking advantage of five walks and six hits to score 11 runs. With the bases loaded Jake Wilcox sent a grand slam over the left field wall. Two batters latter Cole Conner did the same, followed immediately by Reed's third long ball of the day.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell pounded out 17 hits, led by three from Reed and Wilcox while Dickerson, Conner, Chase Elias and Alex Epp each had two.
  • Reed's three home runs is the most by a Cardinal since Dylan Christie did the same against Missouri S&T in 2016.
  • Jackson Bodinson (7-1) tossed his fourth complete game of the year, striking out three and allowing just two earned runs on five hits.
  • The Cardinal's two grand slams in the sixth inning is the 11th time in Division II history that a team has hit two in the same frame.
