The William Jewell women's soccer team opens the 2022 season on Thursday evening at Rogers State before returning to Greene Stadium on Sunday to host Washburn in the home opener. The Cardinals are coming off a 0-15-2 season while the Hillcats were 9-8-1 last fall.
Series History
Jewell and Rogers State will meet for the fourth time in the NCAA era this week. The Cardinals lead the series 2-1, but dropped last year's non-conference matchup 2-0. The teams also met in back-to-back seasons in 2014 and 2015 with the Cards outscoring RSU 11-1 in those matches.
Back Again
Jewell returns 11 players that appeared in at least 600 minutes last season, including seniors
Corrine Hughes,
Paige Liston,
Jayme Coon, and
Mallory Dickerson. The foursome combined for three goals on 26 shots and more than 4,000 minutes.
Experienced Sophomores
The injury bug hit the Cardinals hard last season and youngsters were leaned up heavily. That experience should benefit Jewell this fall as sophomores
Clara Fronabarger,
Claire Weber,
Grace Reineke and
Ella Trinidad all appeared in at least 13 games as rookies.
Dishing it Out With the Best
Sophomore
Clara Fronabarger is back for her second season after handing out six assists last year which ranked her, not only tops on the team, but among the top-15 freshmen in Division II in 2021.
New Faces on the Pitch
Jewell welcomed in an 11-member freshman class to bolster the roster this fall. The rookies hail from four different states and many will be expected to make an immediate impact in their debut seasons. In addition to the new players, there are new faces roaming the sidelines as
Emily Key,
Taylor Wagner,
Natasha Pendleton Flores,
Kaely Watt and
Bethany Koutsouridis combine for an all-women staff for the first time in program history.
50 Years of Women's Varsity Sports
The 2022-2023 academic year marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX and the 50th year of women's varsity sports of the William Jewell campus. The five original teams included basketball, volleyball, swimming, tennis and field hockey while women's soccer joined the department in 1996. Jewell will be celebrating the growth and accomplishments of women's athletics throughout the year, headlined by an all-women's Hall of Fame class, to be inducted on September 23 which includes the 2010 women's soccer team.
