Jewell Leaves Arkansas with Two Wins

SEARCY, Ark. - The William Jewell volleyball team traveled to Arkansas for the final weekend of tournament play where they grabbed two wins. The Cardinals come home sitting at 7-3 overall.

vs. EAST CENTRAL 
  • The Cardinals came out of the gates slow in the weekend's opener, falling behind by as many as six early. A 6-2 run pulled Jewell back within one, 20-19 after a Bella LaPorta ace, but East Central finished off the set 25-23. 
  • Set two again started in favor of the Tigers who led 15-10 after back-to-back Cardinal errors. Jewell rallied late closing the gap behind a 7-3 run with two kills from Anna Godfredsen to tie things up at 24. The Cards held four set points before another ace from LaPorta finished it off 30-28 to tie the match at one set apiece. 
  • The momentum of set two carried into the next, as the Cardinals jumped on top 20-14. ECU pulled back within two late but a kill from Katy Garrison coupled with a Tiger error gave the Cards the 25-21 win. 
  • Jewell jumped out in front early in the finale and never looked back, finishing with a 7-2 run, capped by a Tatum Ernt kill to win 25-18.  

KEY STATS
  • Jewell hit a season best .305 and committing just 13 errors. Four Cardinals finished in double figures with LaPorta leading the way with 17, followed by Alex Dvorak's 14, Godfredsen's 12, and Garrison's 11. 
  • LaPorta posted her sixth double-double of the season adding 11 digs as well as four blocks and two aces. 
  • Haidan Baade dug up 17 balls while Jordan Collard added 14. 
  • Samantha Thompson finished with 31 assists while Drew Baxter had 20. 
  • Ernt finished with seven kills while posting a career high seven blocks. 
 
vs. OUACHITA BAPTIST
  • The second match of the day was up-and-down for both teams. The Cardinals came from behind in the opener, trailing 18-16 midway through before rallying to go on top 24-23. The Tigers held off set point twice but a kill from Dvorak followed by an OBU error ended it 27-25 in favor of the Cardinals. 
  • Set two was all Tigers, who went on a 14-3 run midway through to go on top and roll to the 25-13 win. 
  • Trailing 17-13 in the third, the Cardinals made things interesting late, pulling within five but back-to-back kills gave OBU the 25-18 win and the lead. 
  • After an ugly set two, Jewell returned the favor in the fourth, jumping out to a 21-8 lead before finishing on a 8-5 run to force the fifth set. 
  •   Tied at five in the deciding set, OBU took advantage of five Cardinal errors to go in front 11-6. Jewell pulled back within one behind back-to-back aces from Samantha Thompson but three kills by the Tigers closed it out 15-12.  

KEY STATS
  • Garrison led the Cardinals with 15 kills while Godfredsen added 14 and LaPorta 12. 
  • Thompson put up 31 assists along with four aces.
  • Baade picked up a season high 27 digs with Collard adding 18 and Thompson 11. 
 
vs. ARKANSAS MONTICELLO
  • The Cardinals burst out of the gates in the opening set, opening up a 15-3 lead. UAM used a short 10-4 run to get back within six but Jewell finished off the opening 25-14, behind kills from Godfredsen, Ernt and Baxter.
  • Leading by just one midway through the second set, the Cardinals closed with a 10-4 run with two more kills from Baxter to take a two set lead. 
  • Jewell held UAM to a negative attack percentage (-.022) in the finale while committing just one error themselves, to win 25-16 and get the sweep.  

KEY STATS
  • The Jewell defense was superb, holding UAM to a zero attack percentage on the day and posting 11 blocks, led by Ernt's career high eight. 
  • Three Cardinals posted double digit digs, with Baade leading the way with 17 while LaPorta added 14 and Hannah Cope 11. 
  • Ernt and LaPorta had eight kills to lead the offense while Baxter handed out 16 assists. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals open the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday evening as they host Pittsburg State in the Mabee Center at 6 p.m.
