Late Score and Defensive Stand Give Cardinals First Win Since 2019

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football time got back in the victory column on Saturday with a 24-17 win over Kentucky Wesleyan. The win moves the Cardinals to 1-3 on the season and snaps a 27-game losing streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Things started well for Jewell as Grant Latina took the opening kick off 62 yards to set up the first play from the Kentucky Wesleyan 34-yard line. After a pass interference call on the Panthers, Jewell got a fresh set of downs and advanced to the two-yard line where Taylor Eggers ran it in for the first opening quarter score of the season.
  • The Cardinals made it a two-score lead as CJ Ward found Tabren Yates for three yards in the end zone to cap a 73-yard drive to go in front 14-0.
  • KWC matched the Cardinals total in the second quarter scoring on back-to-back drives to knot things up at the break.
  • Both defenses surged in the third quarter, holding the score at 14-all until Blake Vivrette hit a 48-yard field goal to put the Panthers on top for the first time.
  • The fourth quarter was a wild battle, starting with a 34-yard field goal from Paul Geelen to tie it at 17 with just over 14 minutes remaining.
  • The Panthers followed with missed 44-yard field goal attempt to keep it a tie game. With less than five minutes to play, the Cardinals forced a punt but a penalty gave the ball right back to the Panthers, however, on the ensuing play Kwesi Hooks intercepted the KWC quarterback and returned it 33 yards to give Jewell a chance.
  • On third-and-five, Ward connected with Hunter Thomas for 10 yards to the one yard line and turned things over to Eggers who ran it in for the second time in the game.
  • With just 1:09 remaining, Kentucky Wesleyan drove the length of the field down to the one yard line. The Panthers attempted back-to-back passes over the middle but both were broken up by Sean Mitchell as the clock expired and gave Jewell the victory.
