The William Jewell women's soccer team returns to Greene Stadium this weekend as they host Rockhurst University in the 2022 Great Lakes Valley Conference opener.Â
Series History
Jewell and Rockhurst are old rivals with the campuses sitting just 21 miles a part and have meet 11 times since the Cardinals joined the GLVC. The Hawks lead the series 9-2 with the last Jewell win coming in a 4-1 victory in October 2015.  Â
Let's Recap
The Cardinals are looking to rebound after a tough 5-0 loss at the hands of Lindenwood last weekend. The now Division I Lions scored early before adding two penalties in the second half. Â
Hughes Records Hat Trick
Corrine Hughes is off to a blistering start to her senior campaign, already doubling her goal total from a year ago. The forward put up the first hat trick in nine years for the Cardinals as Jewell got their first win since April 2021 in a 3-1 victory over Newman. The last three-goal game was by Olivia Dykes against Southwest Baptist in September 2013. Hughes enters conference play leading the league with four total goals and 2.25 points per game.Â
Helping Hand
The Cardinals have recorded over half as many goals through the first four games as they did all of last season and have done so by distributing the ball across the front. As a team Jewell is second in the GLVC and 35th nationally with six assists and 1.50 per game. Â
In Goal
The Cardinals continue to work out the keeper position, looking for consistency in the net.
Taylor Thompson has started three games with 267 minutes in goal while
Katie Wagenheim has appeared in three games as well. The pair has combined for six saves per game which leads the GLVC.Â
50 Years of Women's Varsity Sports
The 2022-2023 academic year marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX and the 50th year of women's varsity sports of the William Jewell campus. The five original teams included basketball, volleyball, swimming, tennis and field hockey while women's soccer joined the department in 1990. Jewell will be celebrating the growth and accomplishments of women's athletics throughout the year, headlined by an all-women's Hall of Fame class, to be inducted on September 23 which includes the 2010 women's soccer team.Â
