Jewell Hits the Road for Three Game Stretch

1/11/2023 10:42:00 AM

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team hits the road for the first time in 2023 on Thursday as they travel to Truman State. After a bye on Saturday, the Cardinals head to downtown Kansas City for a rematch with crosstown rival Rockhurst.

THE SERIES
Jewell is 4-20 all-time against Truman State but has yet to defeat the Bulldogs during the NCAA era, going 0-15 since 2013-14. The Cardinals have come close, falling by one point in multiple meetings. Meanwhile, Jewell the Hawks will meet for the 160th time on Monday with the Cardinals going 69-90 since 1918, including a 79-62 win on December 10.

CARDINAL NOTES

  • The Cardinals are looking to bounce back after a loss to Quincy last Saturday by the slimmest of margins, 67-66. Jewell took down Illinois Springfield 73-63 last Thursday.
  • The Cardinals have been dominant on the glass as of late, out rebounding their opponents in each of the last eight games, including two games with a rebounding margin of more than 20. Jewell leads the league with an average of 38.2 rebounds per game in conference contests and has blown all other league teams away in rebounding margin thus far, sitting at 9.3 with the next highest team coming in at 2.8 (Southwest Baptist). Heri Tshiyoyo leads the battle on the glass with 8.8 rebounds per game including 3.13 on the offense end, both second in the GLVC.
  • Jordan Jermain enters the week ranked third in the league with 226 total points for an average of 15.1 per game while putting in 35:07 minutes per contest. After a cold end to November, the junior has been lighting it up in December and January, scoring in double figures in each of the last six games including 25 points against Kansas Christian. He has also averaged three assists during the same period.
  • Jewell is one of only two teams that boasts two different players who average at least two made three pointers per conference game. Jermain and Mason Alexander join Drury's Quenton Shelton and Preston Cook as the only sharp shooting duos in the league.
  • The Cardinals have been effective defensively in conference play, sitting second only to UIndy in scoring defense. Jewell is allowing teams just 61.8 points per game and have allowed only one league opponent more than 70 points while holding three to 60 or less.
  • Alexander continues to move up career charts in multiple areas. The fifth year senior has moved into fourth place in three point field goals (251), second in three point field goal attempts (697), sixth in total minutes played (3,501), 20th in assists (286) and is close to joining the top-25 in career scoring.
