Cardinals Begin Three Game Road Swing at Truman

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball is back on the road this week as they head to Truman State University on Thursday before making the short trip downtown on Monday evening for a rematch with the Hawks of Rockhurst. 

THE SERIES
The Cardinals are 3-14 against Truman State, since the Bulldogs joined the GLVC prior to the 2013-14 season. The last win over Truman came at home, 86-72, in February 2019. Jewell is 14-10 in the NCAA era against Rockhurst, including a 69-66 win back on December 17.     

CARDINAL NOTES

  • Jewell is coming off a 1-1 weekend, defeating Illinois Springfield, 76-63, on Thursday before a fourth quarter run by Quincy on Saturday, dropped the Cardinals 69-52. 
  • Jewell has been superb defensively against three point shooters, limiting opponents to just 28.9%, second best in the GLVC. The Cardinals have held their opponents under 30% in 10-of-17 games this season. 
  • The Cards enter the week ranked fourth among GLVC teams with 26.4 defensive rebounds per game, led by Emree Zars 5.6, third best in the league and highest among rookies. Overall, Jewell is grabbing 34.1 boards per outing, but are out rebounded by opponents by an average of 5.1. Zars leads the team with 6.9 per game while Chloe Frank adds 4.6.
  • Frank recorded her first career double-double on Thursday night with a 14 point, 11 rebound performance against Illinois Springfield. The freshman was 5-of-10 from the floor, including 2-of-5 from long range and is the second Cardinal newcomer to post a double-double, joining Zars. 
  • Bree Shannon was hot off the bench again last week, averaging 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. The freshman tied her career high with 19 points against Illinois Springfield and was one rebound shy of a double-double. 
  • The Cardinals have gotten to the free throw line nearly 300 times already this winter, making 206 of those 286 attempts. Jewell had just 227 made free throws (356 attempts) all of last season. The team enters the week ninth in the league with more than 12 free shots per game while connecting 71.3% of the time. Katie Knock and Rachel Senn are tops on the team, both shooting better than 90% from the line while Zars leads the way and ranks eighth in the conference wth 48 makes on 59 attempts.
