Cardinals Go Cold Late in Loss to UMSL

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team held a fourth quarter lead on Thursday night but went cold from the floor as Missouri-St. Louis rallied to defeat the Cardinals 57-54. Jewell drops to 4-18 on the season and 2-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals got off to a strong start, hitting three three pointers in the opening four minutes to take an early 9-3 lead. UMSL went on a 12-4 run to take a two point lead but Bree Shannon scored with 26 seconds to play in the period to make it 15-all after 10 minutes.
  • Jewell started the second frame much like the first, as Chloe Frank and Elizabeth Ernsting hit three pointers to give the Cards a six point lead. The Tritons outscored Jewell 7-4 over the final five minutes but Libby Arnold sank two free throws with two seconds on the clock to give Jewell a 29-28 lead at the intermission.
  • Both teams went back-and-forth in the third period until the Cardinals took a late lead. Tied at 39, Ayden Shannon hit back-to-back threes to make it 45-41 in favor of Jewell heading into the final quarter.
  • An Emree Zars jumper made it a six point Cardinal lead with 8:49 to play. UMSL closed the game on a 16-8 run to win by three as a Frank three point attempt fell short at the buzzer.
