Cardinals Drop Heartbreaker to Quincy, 67-66

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team had GLVC leader Quincy University on the ropes late on Saturday but the Hawks hit key free throws down the stretch to defeat the Cardinals 67-66. Jewell drops to 7-8 on the season and 4-3 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams battled early, trading buckets until Quincy went on a 10-0 run top open up a 17-8 lead. Eli Wingert was the recipient of multiple alley oops from Jordan Jermain that helped pull the Cardinals back into the game, trailing by just two, 21-19. A Grant Stubbs layup made it a one point game but the Hawks finished on a 16-9 run to take an eight point advantage into the break, 40-32.
  • Quincy maintained their lead through the first half of the second period before a three-point play by Jermain kick started the Cardinal rally. Jermain and Kobe McKinley pulled Jewell back within two before a three by Mason Alexander put the Cards on top for the first time since the 16:46 mark of the first half.
  • The momentum stayed with the Cardinals as McKinley slammed home a dunk while Isaac Patterson drove for a key layup late to keep Jewell on top, 61-59. With under 30 seconds to play, the Hawks hit two five key free throws to go on top by four. Jermain hit a three at the buzzer but it was too little, too late for the Cardinals, falling 67-66.

KEY STATS
  • Jermain led four players in double figures with 15 points while Alexander had 14, McKinley 12 and Stubbs 11.
  • McKinley picked up his second double-double of the season with 12 rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals.
