HOUGHTON, Mich. - The William Jewell women's basketball team hung with Northern Michigan for three quarters on Saturday afternoon, but the Wildcats pulled away late to down the Cardinals 83-64. Jewell drops to 0-2 on the young season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams came out evenly in the first eight minutes as a layup from Averi Porter tied things up at 14. Ayden Shannon scored with 65 seconds left in the frame to give Jewell at 16-14 lead after one.
- Northern Michigan responded with a 16-7 run but a two triples from Chloe Frank and Emree Zars stopped the skid and and made it a five-point game at the break, 36-31.
- To open the third period, NMU expanded their lead to nine but the Cardinals rallied as Frank put together a three-point play to get back within four.
- Jewell went cold over the final 14 minutes of action as the Wildcats followed with a 39-17 run to grab their largest lead of the day, 83-57. Shannon and Libby Arnold combined for the final seven points of the game to bring the score to the final of 83-64.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Zars led the Cardinals with a double-double including a career high 27 points to go with 11 rebounds.
- Shannon added 15 while Frank chipped in 10.
- Jewell shot 39.3% from the floor while Northern Michigan hit on a 43.3% clip.
