Cardinals Pick Up Big 84-60 Win Over Newman

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday night with at 84-60 route of Newman University on their home court. The win moves the Cardinals to 1-2 on the season and marked the first career win for head coach Kyley Bachand

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ayden Shannon got the scoring started early with a bucket 59 seconds into the game as Jewell started strong, holding an 11-7 lead after a pull up jumper from Emree Zars before the media timeout. Newman rallied to tie things up at 16 just before the end of the first period but Averi Porter had other plans, hitting a half court shot as time expired to make it 19-16.
  • The Cardinals continue their 13-5 run into the second frame, pushing the lead to nine after an offensive rebound put-back from Katie Knock with 6:28 to go in the half. Shannon put two free throws in just before the break to make it 40-29 in favor of the home team.
  • Jewell outscored the Jets 16-10 in the third quarter, expanding their advantage to 17 heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • As good as the offense had been in the first three, the Cardinals poured it on in the final frame, scoring 28 points, including going 13-of-16 from the free throw line and pushing the lead to as many as 24. The bench got in on the action late as Ellie Knock, Caitlin Behling, Kate Hillyer, and Bree Shannon all scored over the final minutes.
