Northwest Missouri State Pulls Away from Cardinals in Fourth Quarter

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team fell late to Northwest Missouri State on Friday night, 72-56 and drop to 1-3 on the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell kept pace in the early going as Emree Zars scored 10 of the Cardinals first 12 points. The Bearcats finished the opening period on a 6-0 run to lead 18-12 after 10 minutes. 
  •  Northwest Missouri State hit a three to make it 23-16 midway through the second quarter but six points from Ayden Shannon got Jewell back within three. Peyton Kelderman drove the lane for a bucket with just under 90 seconds remaining to give the Bearcats a 29-23 lead at the break. 
  • Trialing by seven early in the third frame, the Cardinals went on a 6-2 run, capped by back-to-back Chloe Frank layups to pull within two. Northwest Missouri State finished the quarter on a 13-2 run of their own to take a 50-37 lead. 
  • The Bearcats expanded their advantage to as many as 19 midway through the fourth quarter. Jewell hit late free throws but could not overcome the deficit, falling 72-56.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Zars finished with a game high 21 points on 7-of-12 from the floor and a team best six rebounds. 
  • Ayden Shannon added a dozen points while Bree Shannon led the team with three assists. 
  • Jewell shot 35.7% from the floor and scored 19 points off turnovers.

Jewell continues their road trip on Tuesday at Washburn University. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
