LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team fell 74-62 on Saturday to Quincy University in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener. The Cardinals fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Quincy took an early lead before a drive from Averi Porter got Jewell on the board. Back-to-back threes from Abigail Jones gave the Cardinals their first lead while another bucket from Porter made it 16-15 in favor of the home team after one quarter.
- The Hawks used a big second quarter to go out in front, going on a 21-10 run. Bree Shannon and Ayden Shannon combined for Jewell's final eight points as the Cards went to the break trailing 41-33.
- A driving layup followed by a three from Emree Zars opened the second half for the Cardinals who quickly cut the deficit to five, 43-38. From there, Quincy went on a 13-3 run to again expand the lead to double digits.
- Both offenses were stagnant in the final frame, each scoring nine points. Another Jones triple got the Cards back within 10 but Jewell could get no closer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Shannon sisters combined to lead the offense with Ayden scoring 15 and Bree, 13. The pair also picked up a combined five steals.
- Zars and Jones each added nine points apiece.
- The Cardinal bench outscored their counterpart, 25-14.
UP NEXT
Jewell hits the road next week for their first GLVC road game against Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday night. Due to scheduling conflicts, the game will be played on the campus of Missouri Baptist.
