QUINCY, Ill. - The William Jewell men's basketball team opened the Hansen Spear Funeral Home Classic on Saturday afternoon at Quincy University. The Cardinals fell 76-72 to Wayne State University (Mich.) and drop to 6-4 on the season.  
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Cardinal offense got off to a slow start in the opening half, going more than five minutes without a field goal as Wayne State built an 18-11 lead. 
• Mawutor Nogoson's layup at the 8:28 mark sparked 12-4 run to put Jewell back in front, 24-22. However, the Warriors responded with a 15-4 spurt of their own to go to the locker room up 37-28 at the half. 
• Both teams traded buckets in the early going of the second period as Wayne State maintained their double digit advantage. A triple from Grant Stubbs pulled the Cardinals back within five midway through the half while another Stubbs three four minutes later made it just a three point game, 55-52, at the 8:49 mark. 
• Wayne State expanded their lead back to 10 with a quick 9-2 run. The Cardinals put up a fight in the final minutes, drawing within three with 35 seconds on the clock but could not overcome the deficit, falling 76-72. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Kobe McKinley led the Cardinals with 16 points while Stubbs added 15 and Isaac Patterson, 10. 
• Jordan Jermain had a team best five rebounds and tied his career high with seven assists. 
• Wayne State shot a blistering 57% from the floor while the Cardinals connected on 49%.
