Strong Middle Quarters Lead Cardinals to Win Over Avila

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team came on strong in the final three quarters on Tuesday afternoon to defeat Avila University 75-57 in non-conference action. The Cardinals improve to 3-8 on the season to close the fall semester. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After more than two scoreless minutes midway through the first quarter, Avila jumped out to a 12-7 lead but a three from Chloe Frank brought Jewell within two after 10 minutes. 
  • Jewell opened the second period with a 21-10 run, capped by four straight triples as Frank and Caitlin Behling hit two apiece to give the Cardinals a 31-21 advantage. The Eagles finished on a 6-2 run to cut to trail 33-27 at the break. 
  • The third quarter was all Cardinals as they outscored Avila 17-8 and expanded their lead to as many as 15 after a three from Ayden Shannon
  • A free throw from Emree Zars with five minutes to play gave Jewell their largest lead of the day at 67-41. Avila closed the game on a 16-8 run but Libby Arnold ended things with another triple to give the Cardinals the 75-57 win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Zars led three players in double figures with 14 points while Frank added 13 with both players picking up a team high seven rebounds. Ayden Shannon also finished with 10 points
  • The Cardinals shot 43% from the field and a season best 58% from long range, hitting 11-of-19. Additionally, Jewell was 20-of-22 (91%) from the free throw line. 
  • The Jewell bench outscored their counterpart 40-23. 

UP NEXT
Jewell is off for the mandatory NCAA-II break and will be back in action on January 3 as they travel to Southwest Baptist.
