BOLIVAR, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team took down Southwest Baptist on Wednesday evening by a final of 68-61 for the first win of the new year. The Cardinals improve to 4-8 overall with their second straight win, and 2-4 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals trailed 9-8 late in the first quarter before going on a 12-4 run over the next seven minutes, aided by six points from Chloe Frank, to go on top 20-13.
- Southwest Baptist rallied with a 13-7 run of their own to pull within one but a missed free throw gave the Cards a 27-26 lead at the half.
- The Bearcats came out of the break and quickly retook the lead but a triple from Katie Knock put Jewell right back in front. The teams traded buckets over the next nine minutes as the Cardinals led 39-37 late in the third period.
- Two quick threes from Ayden Shannon pushed the Cardinals to their largest lead of the at 47-37 with 9:15 to play in regulation. SBU would not go quietly as they hit five three pointers in the final frame to stay within striking distance. The Shannon sisters took over during the final minutes, combining for 13 points late in the fourth to preserve the win.

- Ayden Shannon led all scorers with 25 points on 4-of-8 from long range.
- Frank added 16 points while Bree Shannon chipped in nine points.
- Knock led the team with nine rebounds.
- The Cardinals shot 41% from the floor and were 14-of-17 from the free throw line.
