Cardinals Fall Short in Final Seconds Against UIndy

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team put together a big fourth quarter rally on Saturday afternoon to take a late lead over Indianapolis but fell in the final moments, 59-55. The Cardinals fall to 4-23 on the season and 2-15 in league action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell took control early, outscoring the Greyhounds 14-8 over the first seven-plus minutes after four straight free throws from Kate Hillyer and Emree Zars. UIndy scored four points to close the first period but a jumper from Hillyer gave the Cards a 16-12 lead.
  • UIndy outscored the Cardinals 19-8 in the second period to go in front by seven at the break, 31-24.
  • Both teams struggled offensively, each shooting less than 27% from the floor as the Greyhounds maintained their seven point advantage heading into the final frame, leading 40-33.
  • In the fourth quarter, Jewell got three straight buckets from Zars, Katie Knock and Skyler Boylan to quickly cut the deficit to just one. With 6:19 to play, Boylan gets a defensive rebound on one end and goes to the other to make a crafty move under the basket and give the Cardinals their first lead since early in the second period. The teams traded the lead back-and-forth over the next six minutes. Trailing by two with 27 seconds remaining, Jewell made 1-of-2 free throws forcing them to foul and the Greyhounds converted 3-of-4 down the stretch to escape with the win.

KEY STATS

  • Jewell shot 32.8% from the floor and was 12-of-15 from the free throw line.
