Cardinals Shutout Lincoln for First Win

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team rebounded from an opening game loss to Lincoln  University to take game two, 3-0, to grab their first win of the 2023 season and move to 1-4. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1
  • Lincoln got on the board early in the opener, scoring on an RBI single by Emily Williams. The Blue Tigers added another run in the second to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • The Cardinals cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the second, as Abby Vandiver scored on an RBI infield single from Payton Totzke
  • Lincoln added four runs on five hits in the sixth inning to open up a 6-1 lead. 
  • In the final at bat, the Cardinals got one run back at Totzke scored on a Sophia Lopez RBI single.  
Game 2
  • Jewell scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the first inning as the first three batters reached on two infield singles and an error. Lopez single to left field to score Totzke followed by RBI ground outs from Grace Woods and Amanda Chung
  • The Blue Tigers put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh but Olivia Wood got Leah Wagner to strikeout looking to end the game.  

KEY STATS
  • Sophia Lopez posted three hits on the day with two RBI to lead the offense. 
  • Totzke, Sabrina Olmo and Kenzie Stahl all picked up one hit in each game. 
  • Sydney Parra (0-2) suffered the loss in game one, working 6.1 innings, allowing six earned runs. 
  • Wood (1-1) earned her first career win, going the distance, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals continue non-conference action on Tuesday as they travel to Central Missouri. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
