Key Rematches on Tap for Men's Basketball

2/9/2023 12:42:00 AM

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team is back in the Mabee Center this weekend to take on Lewis followed by a big rematch with No. 7 ranked Indianapolis.

THE SERIES
Jewell is 4-8 all-time against Lewis and have won the last two meetings, including a 76-60 victory in Romeoville, back on December 3. The Cardinals are also meeting UIndy for the second time this season and are 1-11 against the Greyhounds after dropping a 72-56 decision in early December.

CARDINAL NOTES

  • The Cardinals are coming off an important win over Maryville on Saturday by a 71-66 final. Jewell rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to get the road win, their fifth in conference play this year and most since joining the GLVC.
  • Heri Tshiyoyo picked up his seventh double-double of the season on Saturday and his third in the last five games. The fifth year senior ranks 17th nationally and leads the GLVC with 212 total rebounds on the season and an average of 9.1 per game during conference play. In his two-year career with the Cardinals he has pulled down 8.6 boards per night on average, on pace to finish in top-10 in program history and currently 14th among active players in Division II.
  • After a tough offensive outing two weeks ago,  Jordan Jermain bounced back in a big way, averaging 26.5 points over two games last weekend. The junior is closing in on a big milestone, sitting 61 points from 1,000 for his career in just 70 games played. Should he reach the plateau this season, he would be the 45th player in program history to do so and just the 17th to get there prior to their senior year. Jermain is averaging 15.9 points this season with 366 total, highest in the league.
  • The top two defensive teams in the GLVC face off this weekend as the Cardinals enter ranked second, giving up just 64.8 points per game while the Greyhounds of Indianapolis sit in first at 63.9. Both teams allow opponents to shoot no better than 42% from the field, the top two marks in the conference.
  • No combination of players in league play together more than that of Jermain and Mason Alexander. The pair are second and third, respectively, in the GLVC in minutes per game, at more than 36 in league action, behind only McKendree's Bryson Bultman (37.57). They are also one of the top shooting duos in the conference, combining for nearly five three point field goals per game.
  • Things are heating up in the last three weeks of the regular season in the race toward the GLVC Tournament.  The Cardinals currently sit in fourth in the league's Point Rating System (PRS), just one-tenth point behind Rockhurst and have the opportunity to move with three of the five remaining opponents boasting win percentages better than than .570.
