LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team continued to roll on Sunday, winning two games over Missouri S&T, 8-7 and 15-7 to open GLVC play 4-0. The Cardinals move to 13-3 on the season, winning their twelfth straight.
Game 1 (Jewell 8, Missouri S&T 7)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Missouri S&T took the early lead, scoring in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals got on the board in the third frame as Cole Conner drew a bases load walk before Jake Wilcox scored on a fielder's choice. Alex Epp made it 3-1, Cardinals, after scoring on a throwing error.
- Jewell added two more on a Conner single up the middle in the next inning before the Miners rallied to plate five and take a 6-5 lead.
- Wilcox led off the sixth inning with a double and scored on a two-run blast off the bat of Epp to put the Cards back in front.
- Missouri S&T tied things up in the seventh and forced extra innings.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Jewell put two runners on for Ben Click who sent a base hit back up the middle scoring Epp in walk off fashion.
KEY STATS
- Jewell posted 10 hits, led by three from Kaden Owens. Wilcox and Conner also had two apiece.
- Epp scored three times while Conner drove three.
- Jack Wells (1-0) earned his first win of the season, tossing the final frame.
Game 2 (Jewell 15, Missouri S&T 7)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jordan Phillips put Jewell on the board with a lead off home run in the bottom of the second inning, followed by a Dawson Tweet double to make it 2-0.
- Epp hit his second home run of the day in the third with a three run shot to right center. Tweet and Drew Reed add two more runs to push the Jewell advantage to 7-0.
- The Miners scored four runs on five hits in the fourth but the Cardinals got one back in the bottom half on an RBI ground out from Phillips.
- Missouri S&T continued to respond, scoring three more in the fifth inning to pull within one, 8-7.
- The Cardinals added much needed insurance runs in the following frame. Epp singled through the right side, scoring Wilcox before a bases loaded walk to Owens added another. Tweet put four more on the board with a grand slam over the right field wall to bring the score to the final of 15-7.
KEY STATS
- Reed, Epp, Phillips and Tweet all finished with two hits as the latter three each hit one home run.
- Steve Kleyheeg (1-0) picked up his first win as a Cardinal working three innings in relief, giving up just two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
