LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team split with Northern State on Sunday afternoon to open the three-game series, taking game one, 4-3 before falling 3-1 in the nightcap. The Cardinals move to 3-12 on the year.
Game 1 (Jewell 4, Northern State 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell took the early lead as Payton Totzke singled and advanced on a wild pitch, followed by Kenzie Stahl reaching on a fielding error to put two in scoring position. Addie Bell grounded out to the right side to score the first run while Stahl scored on a fielder's choice.
- The Cardinals doubled their lead in the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits and a NSU error. With two on, Totzke stole second allowing Sheyenne Kelch to cross the plate on the errant throw. Sophia Lopez made it 4-0 with a double down the right field line, plating Totzke.
- The Wolves made things interesting down the stretch, getting a two our three run home run but a foul out to third ended the threat.
KEY STATS
- Totzke finished with two hits and two runs while Bell, Lopez and Amanda Chung all had one RBI.
- Aliyah Santiago (2-1) earned the win, working all seven innings, allowing just three earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Game 2 (Jewell 1, Northern State 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals broke through first with a run in the fourth. Stahl singled and stole second before coming around to score on a base hit from Chung.
- The Wolves responded with three runs on three hits and two Jewell errors in the top of the fifth and held on late to take game two.
KEY STATS
- The Cardinals were limited to four hits, one each from Totzke, Stahl, Chung and Sabrina Olmo.
- Sydney Parra (0-6) took the loss, allowing just one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts over five innings.
- Sammie Welt tossed two scoreless frames with three strikeouts.

Jewell and Northern State will complete the series on Monday afternoon with a single game. First pitch has been pushed back to for 2:30 p.m.
