SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The bats went cold on Monday for the William Jewell softball team as the Cardinals were held scoreless, falling 8-0 and 1-0 to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Jewell drops to 4-14 on the year and 0-2 in the league. 

Game 1 (Drury 8, Jewell 0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Drury wasted no time as they jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the bottom half of the first, scoring on four hits and one Cardinal error. 
• The Panthers added three more in the second before Katie Heckman settled in and did not allow another run the rest of the way but the Cardinals couldn't get the bats going, falling in five innings. 

KEY STATS

• Jewell was limited to just a single hit, coming from Payton Totzke. 
• Sammie Welt (1-4) took the loss, allowing four earned runs. Heckman worked the final 3.1 frames with three earned on four hits. 

Game 2 (Drury 1, Jewell 0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Drury again took an early lead in game two, scoring on an RBI single to left field. 
• The Cardinals best shot came in the top of the third as Ella Hoffman reached on an error. She advanced to third on a infield single from Sheyenne Kelch, but an out at the plate and a fly out ended the inning. 

KEY STATS

• The Cardinals had two hits, one each from Totzke and Kelch with the latter also swiping a base. 
• Sydney Parra (0-7) took the tough luck loss, allowing just a single earned run on five hits while striking out two.
