Seventh Inning Rally Falls Short to Fort Hays

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team put together a seventh inning comeback in game two of a doubleheader against Fort Hays but fell just short 4-3 after dropping a 2-0 decision in the opener. The Cardinals move to 2-11 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fort Hays jumped out on top in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Loren Beggs. 
  • The Cardinals best opportunity came in the bottom of the fourth, putting two in scoring position with no outs but the Tigers were able to force a strikeout and two pop ups to dissolve the threat. 
  • Fort Hays added a run on an error in the fifth inning to bring the score to the final.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the nightcap, it was Jewell who scored first as Stahl sent a line drive past the diving center fielder for an inside-the-park home run. 
  • The Tigers took the lead in the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits and an error. 
  • Down to their final chance, the Cardinals put together a rally as Stahl singled followed by walk to Sophia Lopez before both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Chung doubled to center field scoring Stahl and the pinch runner, Abby Harder to make it a one run game. Jewell then loaded the bases but a foul out ended the rally. 

KEY STATS
  • The Cardinals were limited to four hits in game two, led by two from Stahl.
  • Chung finished with two RBI while Stahl scored twice. 
  • Sydney Parra (0-5) suffered the loss, allowing three earned over 4.1. 
     
UP NEXT
Jewell hits the road on Tuesday to Emporia State for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
