Newman Takes Two from Cardinals in Midweek Action

WICHITA, Kan. - The William Jewell softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon at Newman University by finals of 5-3 and 8-5. The Cardinals drop to 5-31 overall. 

GAME ONE (Newman 5, Jewell 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell took an early lead, thanks in part to multiple miscues by the Jets. Sabrina Olmo reached first on an error and advanced tho third before scoring on a bases loaded walk to Grace Woods. Ella Hoffman then singled to center plating two more to give the Cards a 3-0 lead. 
  • Newman got one back in the bottom of the second then tied the game in the following frame on back-to-back doubles.
  • The Jets took the lead in the fourth on a sac fly and added an insurance run in the sixth to win 5-3.

KEY STATS
  • Jewell had six hits from six different players. 
  • Hoffman finished with two RBI while Woods had another.
  • Aliyah Santiago (2-5) suffered the loss despite allowing a single earned run over 1.2 innings. 

GAME TWO (Newman 8, Jewell 5)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell again took an early lead in game two as Zavala walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Addie Bell followed with a double to left field. 
  • The Jets tied things up in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI groundout and took a 7-1 lead, scoring five runs in the third. 
  • In the fourth, the Cardinals hit back-to-back home runs by Sophia Lopez and Hoffman to bring the Cards back within three. 
  • Newman added a run in the fourth and Jewell matched it in the fifth as Woods doubled to score Bell. 

KEY STATS
  • Bell finished with two hits while Lopez drove in two runs. 
  • Sammie Welt (2-11) took the loss, allowing six earned runs. 

UP NEXT
Jewell returns to GLVC action on Saturday, hosting Lewis University for Senior Day.
