Cardinals Fall Short to No. 6 UIndy on Senior Day

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team fell 5-1 and 3-0 on Sunday to No. 6 ranked Indianapolis. The Cardinals drop to 5-35 on the season and 0-18 in conference play.

GAME ONE (UIndy 5, Jewell 1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UIndy got back-to-back doubles in the top of the third to score three runs and break the scoreless tie.
  • In the bottom half, Lauren Ledbetter walked and was pinch ran for by Jace Laws to advanced on a sacrifice. Sabrina Olmo then singled to center scoring Laws and putting the Cardinals on the board.
  • The Greyhounds added two more runs in the fifth inning to bring the score to the final.

KEY STATS
  • Olmo finished with two of Jewell's four hits along with an RBI.
  • Aliyah Santiago (2-6) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits over 4.2 frames.

GAME TWO (UIndy 3, Jewell 0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Greyhounds scored first in game two, as a single to right combined with an error allowed the first run to cross the plate. UIndy added another run in the sixth and an additional unearned run in the seventh.
  • The Cardinals made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh as Ella Hoffman put a base hit through the left side with two outs to give Jewell life. Grace Woods followed with a pinch hit single to left and both runners advanced on a wild pitch, bringing the tying run to the plate. A pitching change for the Hounds resulted in a ground ball to second, and ended the Cardinal threat.

KEY STATS
  • Olmo, Hoffman, Woods and Mya Zavala each had one hit for the Cardinals.
  • Sydney Parra (0-12) suffered the loss, despite allowing just a single earned run over six-plus innings of work.
