LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team got back in the win colum on Thursday night with a doubleheader sweep of Lincoln University. The Cardinals took game one 8-3 and game two 1-0 to improve to 7-35 on the year.
GAME ONE (Jewell 8, Lincoln 3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lincoln took the early lead with a sac fly from Morgan Ollison in the top of the first inning but the Cardinals came right back in the bottom half with two runs. Sabrina Olmo singled and came around to score on back-to-back wild pitches. A fielding error by the right fielder allowed Grace Woods to score after a base hit from Sophia Lopez.
- In the bottom of the second, Jewell was the recipient of five consecutive walks to score three runs on just one hit and increase their lead to 5-1.
- The Cardinals added three more in the fourth as Woods doubled to score Olmo before Lopez came through with a two RBI single to push the advantage to seven.
- Lincoln got a run in the sixth and one in the seventh but a groundout back to reliever Katie Heckman closed the door.
KEY STATS
- Olmo and Lopez each picked up two hits to lead the Cardinals with the former scoring three times.
- Woods and Lopez also had two RBI.
- Sammie Welt (3-12) earned the win, working 6.1 frames, allowing just two earned runs while striking out seven.
GAME TWO (Jewell 1, Lincoln 0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The lone run in game two came in the second inning. Lopez put a lead off double into left field and advanced on an infield single from Abby Vandiver. After line drive double play put two outs on the board, the defense mistakenly walked off the field, leaving the plate unattended and allowing Lopez to steal home and put a run on the board.
- The Blue Tigers put the tying run in scoring position in each of the final four innings but the Cardinal defense came through each time and kept the clean sheet.
KEY STATS
- Jewell got five hits, one each from Vandiver, Olmo, Lopez, Mya Zavala, and Addie Bell.
- Sydney Parra (1-12) picked up her first win, tossing a compete game shutout, giving up just six hits and no walks.
