Game Two Rally Falls Shorts Against Rockhurst

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team fell 4-2 and 7-4 on Saturday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Rockhurst University. The Cardinals drop to 5-29 on the season and 0-14 in conference play. 

GAME ONE (Rockhurst 4, Jewell 2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got the scoring started in the opening frame of game one as Mya Zavala picked up a lead off double and scored on a passed ball. 
  • The Hawks came back with two runs on five hits in the top of the second to take the lead.
  • Sabrina Olmo led off the bottom half of the third with a triple to right field and scored on an RBI single from Addie Bell to tie things at two. 
  • Rockhurst scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take the opener, 4-2. 

KEY STATS
  • Olmo led the Cardinals with three hits while Zavala, Bell, Amanda Chung and Sophia Lopez each had one. 
  • Olivia Wood (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing just a single unearned run in 4.1 innings of relief. 

GAME TWO (Rockhurst 7, Jewell 4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rockhurst took the early lead with a two-run home run in the second inning before Grace Woods cut it in half with a solo blast to lead off the bottom half. 
  • Another two-run shot pushed the Hawks lead to 4-1 before adding another on an error. 
  • The Hawks pushed two more runs across in the fifth inning before the Cardinals put together a rally in the bottom of the sixth. Chung and Kenzie Stahl reached on singles and scored on a pinch hit double from Kelli McCallister. Olmo followed up with a single to left field to cut the deficit to 7-4 but could get no closer. 

KEY STATS
  • Jewell had seven hits from seven different players while McCallister led the team with two RBI. 
  • Sammie Welt (2-10) took the loss, allowing four earned over four frames. 
  • Katie Heckman tossed the final three scoreless innings. 

UP NEXT
Jewell travels to Newman University on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader.
